Residents complain about new-build homes in Yarm – from a wonky floor to a flooded garden

Two residents on a new-build housing estate in Yarm say they have had a number of problems with their homes – with one saying they were forced to stay in a hotel while repairs took place.

Nicky Davies and Stephanie Wilkinson both moved to the Morley Carr estate in Yarm, built by Taylor Wimpey, in 2020 and 2021 respectively, hoping to settle into their forever homes. But the pair claim to have had a number of issues with their properties.

Nicky, 34 and from Middlesbrough, says his home had an uneven floor and a garden that flooded, and claims some of his windows and doors were not fitted correctly. He said: “I moved into my house in August 2020 and it’s been problem after problem.

“I paid £375,000 and Taylor Wimpey had to sort out my back garden which completely flooded. There were also squeaky floor boards. After paying what I did for the house I wouldn’t expect to have these issues.

“I’ve been in contact with the company but I think their customer service has been poor. The house should have no problems to start with because it’s so new.”

No heating, kitchen or water

Stephanie Wilkinson, 31, lives on the Morely Carr estate, with her 32 year old partner Matthew Stoves and their two daughters aged one and two. She says her family lived in temporary accommodation for two weeks while repairs took place on their house.

She said: “We moved into our home on September 24, 2021, and we hoped this would be our forever home where our two girls could grow up.” Stephanie claims the ground floor was not level, which the company fixed – but it did mean the kitchen had to be pulled out and reinstalled.

“It was just after Christmas so we unfortunately couldn’t have the family Christmas we planned, we had to organize the accommodation ourselves and five days soon turned into two and a half weeks,” Stephanie says. She also claims that when they returned home they had no kitchen, no water, no heating or cooking facilities.

She said: “Luckily Matthew is a plumber and heating engineer so he was able to fix the water and heating, but he shouldn’t have to as it should’ve already been done.” Stephanie also says they have trouble closing the front and back doors, and claims there has some flooding to land at the front of their property leaving puddles when it rains.

A spokesperson from Taylor Wimpey said: “We are aware of the issues that Mr Davies and Mrs Wilkinson have experienced with their homes and would like to apologise for the problems they have experienced. We have been in regular contact with these customers to get the issues resolved, and remain committed to complete any outstanding issues as quickly as possible.”
